I’ve loved taking pictures my whole life but always used a point & shoot camera with mixed results. I was never that happy with my studio experiences and didn’t want to pay thousands of dollars for high-end portraits. My husband convinced me to let him buy me a digital SLR camera 14 years ago and we haven’t been back to the studio since (it was a birth gift for our last child:).
Since everything closes by 8 p.m. one evening, we stayed in our rooms, played cards and the next night we went to the Amish Country Theater and had the proverbial barrel of laughs. The two hour show is just plain country humor.
Part of our package from Dutch Host Inn is free breakfast and dinner. The free breakfast is not the continental that’s available at the motel, but it is a coupon to a choice of a couple restaurants including Shoney's, and for dinner we Like Mrs. Yoder's with a buffet complete with every carb there is. It's home cooking with mashed potatoes, gravy, roast beef and chicken.
I was on the road with Susann Barker, Kathy Phillips and Tammy Herb. Four is the perfect number to fit in the car and two in a room at the Dutch Host Inn where we always stay. We take advantage of their package deals, which include things like free breakfasts and dinners, and coupons for a lot of freebies including jars of jelly, cheese, trail bologna, bread, noodles and lots of other local products. The coupons get us in the store, and when four women get in a store it’s shopping time.
Recently I spent three days and two nights in Sugarcreek, Ohio. Known as "The Little Switzerland of Ohio," it’s part of the largest Amish settlement in the world. Don’t go on a Sunday, because most places are closed by 8 p.m.— except for the theaters, which are well worth seeing.
We also get a free game of miniature golf. With my vision problems the green carpet looks level, but it has all kinds of hills and valleys that friends had to get me over because the sight of a very mature woman face down on the golf course is not a pretty sight.
Before covid it was our annual fun and food trip and we get as much eating and fun as anyone could jam into those three days. We were able to go last year and this year so we are on the annual track again.
When you see these little figures on a regular size cuckoo clock they look delicate and charming. Up close, and at least as big as me, they are a bit intimidating. The male figure on the end who lifts his cap was looking at me. He was! I did not want to go back.
I also love playing around in Photoshop and that combined with loving to take pictures has led to making custom announcements, cards & invitations for our family and friends. I did it for free for a couple years for anyone who would let me and then some friends convinced me to start a business. So, here we are!
We leave early and stop for breakfast at Jack's Greasy spoon aka Pop's Greasy Spoon in Salem, Ohio. We found this treasure last year when we were so desperate to find a place to eat that the title Greasy Spoon did not turn us off. His motto is "It’s not healthy but it tastes so good."

We went to see the world's largest cuckoo clock, which does its thing every hour and half-hour. It cuckoos, a door opens and figures come out. An oompah band that plays. people dance, water comes over the water wheel and it lasts about four minutes. I smiled for four minutes. My face was tired from smiling. I don't even know why it made me smile.
Last year I came in second; this year I came in last but I was the only one who got a hole-in-one. I don't know how that happened, but I'm bragging about it. I never played miniature golf or any kind of golf until last year. Who knows what I can do next year.
